Meeting someone from the internet: a safety checklist

Most first meetings are simply nice. A few habits make sure that if something does feel wrong, you are in control. They apply to dates, new friends, study partners and travel buddies alike.

Before you meet

  • Talk in the app for a while first; you learn a lot from how someone writes
  • Prefer verified profiles, and look for consistency between photos and what they say
  • Be wary of anyone who pushes to move to another app quickly or asks for money
  • Choose a busy public place you know, at a time of day you are comfortable with
  • Arrange your own way there and back

On DuskMeet you can plan the meeting inside the chat: the place, the time and a reminder, without sharing your phone number.

Tell someone

Let a friend or family member know where you are going, who you are meeting and when you expect to be done. Agree that you will message them afterwards.

DuskMeet lets you add trusted contacts. After a planned meeting you are asked if you are OK; if you ask for help, or do not answer, your trusted contacts are told.

During the meeting

  • Keep your drink with you
  • Keep your phone charged and with you
  • Do not share your home address or workplace until you are ready
  • Leave whenever you want to. You do not owe anyone an explanation

Afterwards

  • Check in with the person you told
  • If something was wrong, report the profile. Reports on DuskMeet are private, the other person is not told who reported them
  • Block anyone who makes you uncomfortable

If you are ever in immediate danger, contact local emergency services first.

Put it into practice
